Breakfast. In the morning we will visit Corcovado (Hunchback) Mountain at an altitude of 710m, where we will visit the statue of Christ the Redeemer that is certainly one of the world's best-known and most-visited monuments. Clad with a soapstone mosaic, the statue is also one of Rio's finest Art Nouveau monuments and at night becomes a shining landmark visible from all over the city. From the top there are breathtaking views of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, the Botanical Gardens, Jockey Club and Rodrigo Freitas Lagoon. A rack railway will take you up to the foot of the statue, the train leaving the Cosme Velho district and climbing the steep slopes of Tijuca Forest. Located around the base of Corcovado and with many springs and waterfalls, this dense forest was proclaimed a National Park in the early sixties. After descending, the tour stops at Mario Filho Stadium, known worldwide as Maracana and the Sambodromo, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and the stage for the largest and most flamboyant carnival celebrations in Brazil. Transfer out to Rio de Janeiro airport. Flight to Foz do Iguacu and transfer to the hotel. After we leave our luggage we will go for our excursion that begins at Iguacu National Park Visitor Centre with a drive through the park's lush sub-tropical vegetation. On leaving the vehicle we you continue on foot along a trail that leads into the canyon to a spectacular panoramic viewpoint over the falls. A walkway leads right to the edge of the Devil's Throat for an awe-inspiring view into the seething waters. You then take a glass elevator up the cliff-face for a view of the upper falls. Brazil's Iguacu National Park, together with its sister park in Argentina, makes up the most significant remnant of rainforest in the southern cone of South America, and along with the falls has been declared a National Heritage site by UNESCO. Later we will visit the Bird Park that is in complete harmony with its surroundings. Its large, semi-natural enclosures house more than 900 birds of 150 different species, and while walking through the beautiful Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Rainforest), you will see many spectacular native and exotic birds - some of which are endangered species. Toucans swoop low over visitors wandering along the carefully laid-out network of paths, while information boards and signs provide a wealth of information for enthusiasts. As well as the birds, you'll also see snakes, caimans, marmosets and beautiful butterflies. Return to the hotel. Accommodation at the selected hotel. (B)
